Clinical Work

As a clinical psychologist, I work mostly with adults but I also see teenagers.

I offer psychological assessment and evidence-based treatments drawing on the most up-to-date research findings. I am trained in a variety of treatment approaches and all treatment is tailor-made to each client and delivered in an integrative, respectful and non-judgemental way.

Many of us at some stage in our lives will be affected by emotional problems, whether these are short-lived or more enduring.

Clinical psychologists are trained to help people either reduce or accept their emotional distress while helping them to enhance their psychological well-being. This is achieved by the psychologist working collaboratively to assist clients in understanding their difficulties more fully while increasing their

coping strategies, thereby enabling them to view themselves and others in a more positive way.

The following are some of the difficulties I typically work with:

  • anxiety, phobias and depression
  • adjustment to physical illness
  • anger
  • bereavement
  • chronic pain
  • disfigurement
  • eating disorders
  • low self-esteem
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • repeating problem patterns in life
  • post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • stress
  • sexuality issues
  • personal, family and relationship problems

As I work independently, I am unable to provide services where there is a high risk of frequent crisis or involvement with the law.

I do not provide services for the following:

  • treatment for alcohol and substance abuse/dependence, or treatment for other problems (e.g. anxiety, depression) if the person is currently misusing or dependent on alcohol or recreational drugs
  • assessments for legal issues determining capacity to consent, child custody and access matters
  • problems that are associated with frequent and/or severe crises (e.g. actively suicidal and unable/unwilling to contract to not act on thoughts)
  • psychotic disorders

I offer 'case supervision' to trainee and qualified psychologists, counsellors, primary care mental health workers, nurse practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals.

Individual clinicians or organisations wishing to secure supervision for their employees may contact me for an informal discussion of their supervisory needs.

I am sometimes consulted about psychological issues within organisations and businesses and asked to offer psychological input either directly or by writing reports, preparing presentations or conducting research.

Previous clients have included local schools, colleges and statutory charities.

Please contact me to discuss your organisation's needs.
